Castle Lite Africa: Unlock Extra Cold Refreshment

Brief: Communicate the unique Extra Cold Indicator on Castle Lite packaging in a way that creates an immediate, memorable connection with consumers.

Solution: The insight: opening a Castle Lite isn’t just about drinking a beer — it’s a moment that transforms your mood and the environment around you. We positioned the Extra Cold Indicator as the trigger for that transformation. By tying the product feature to a catalyst moment, we made the experience tangible: one sip and everything feels cooler, fresher, and more vibrant.

Concept: Capture the magic of that instant refreshment through everyday situations. When a Castle Lite is opened, the heat of the bar fades, conversations spark, and people feel more free to be themselves—showing that the product doesn’t just quench thirst, it elevates the moment.

Art directing this commercial meant designing two completely different worlds within the same space: a hot, dry African bar transformed into an “extra-cold” Castle Lite universe. The transition needed to feel immediate and dramatic, so every visual detail had to support the shift.

Wardrobe became one of the strongest storytelling tools. In the “heat” world, clothing, makeup and accessories were styled to feel dusty, heavy and sun-beaten. As the beer was opened and the environment changed, those same elements evolved into something cooler, fresher and more vibrant. Every fabric, texture, colour and accessory was carefully considered to reinforce the feeling of relief and refreshment.

As the sole art director on the project, I oversaw and approved every costume, makeup and accessory decision, ensuring the transformation felt cohesive from one frame to the next.

There were also a number of complex visual elements that required close collaboration with external vendors. I art directed the CGI and visual effects, including the dramatic moment where the fridge lands in the bar. The product itself was equally important: the beers had to look unmistakably “extra cold,” so the shoot involved detailed planning around condensation, lighting, styling and camera work to make every bottle and can feel ice-cold and irresistible.

Execution & Result:

  • Television commercial brought the catalyst moment to life, emphasizing the Extra Cold Indicator in action.

  • Campaign reached consumers across South Africa and the wider African continent.

  • The ads made the refreshing, mood-lifting experience of Castle Lite immediately understandable and culturally resonant, driving both awareness and engagement.
