Brief: Introduce Wellington’s Sweet Chili Sauce to new consumers despite a limited budget, and establish it as a versatile, must-have condiment.
Solution: We needed a way to communicate the sauce’s unique character - sweet but with a bite - in a way that was memorable, shareable, and cost-effective. Our approach: turn the flavor insight into a personality-driven message. By giving the sauce a cheeky, witty voice, we could make the taste memorable without relying on expensive production. This strategy also gave rise to the official tagline: “It’s sweet, with a little bite.”
Concept: We brought the tagline to life using smart, cheeky backhanded compliments, positioning the sauce as witty, bold, and memorable. Each ad made viewers smile while showcasing the product’s flavor and versatility.
Execution & Result:
National TV spots in South Africa and online branded content brought the campaign to life.
Ads showcased the sauce’s versatility in beautiful meals, expanding its perceived use beyond a dipping sauce.
Sales increased 35%, driven by curiosity from new consumers.
Existing consumers embraced the “backhanded compliment” approach in their own conversations, organically embedding the brand into daily life.
